Calling all Moms!

Who has used or has friends that have used cloth diapers? I am trying to convince Dan of the cost savings...I think he is almost there. Also I would love any suggestions on brands, types, etc. Jumping the gun maybe, but it is a much bigger upfront cost than disposables :) Any and all suggestions are welcome, would love the comments most if there aren't calling me crazy!

When I read the post title, I was like, "pfff, fine then..." since I'm not a mom. Sorry, I really can't help you here. But you'll have to let us know how those non-disposable diapers work. They look much cooler than the ones my mom used on me :P

not a mom, either, but the actress contance marie (?) from the george lopez show raves about a certain brand of cloth diapers. you can probably google her and find out some details.

I would like to apologize publicly to my lovely Makamae and Megan! Not trying to discriminate...I'm not a mom yet either! Love to you both!!!

Jennifer Grimes uses cloth diapers, I'm sure she'd have some ideas. My birth instructor also was a huge fan (although her husband was on permanent diaper duty, so it was a win-win for her). She gave me some pamphlets. I'll try to dig them up for you.

my sister in law is a huge fan...i couldn't get into it. Something about having to carry poopy diapers around in a zip lock if you are out and about grossed me out. I know they are pretty pricey but once you buy them all eventually it must pay off in the long run. she blogged about it i'll find it for ya!

I spent four months in Ecuador helping babies in orphanages, and they all had cloth diapers. I changed over 25 cloth diapers four times a day for four months.
I also have friends that have done them.
Let me just tell you, that it is VERY messy and VERY time consuming. It is also an added expense, because of the crazy extra amount of laundry you will be doing.
There is also a much greater chance of diaper rash and yeast infections. You have to change them more often to make sure the baby is dry.
If you shop around, you can get really cheap disposable diapers. My vote...disposable diapers.
However..there are probably some great cloth diaper techniques that I haven't heard of.

I agree with the last comment. Disposable all the way! The cost difference is really so small and diapers are made so well these days that you will be wasting more water washing (unless you do a full service) than you will be trees. And they are gross. You have to change them right away or their clothes get all gross too. But....you have to do what is best for yoU!!

We used cloth for Luke until we moved here and I LOVED it. We didn't launder them ourselves, we used a service, but it was really great. I have a good friend who curently uses and loves the fuzzi bums (or buns). I will check with another friend of mine in Oregon to see what brand she uses, and to get her input.

Oh, I just read other comments and thought i'd mention you will have to do laundry more often (which is why we stopped when we moved here because the water consumption in this arid climate didn't feel right
to me--but that's just me).

They do get wetter faster, reqiring more frequent diaper changes, but it isn't really good to keep a wet disposable diaper on a kid for too long either just because you can. I think most literature you'd read on it says that diaper rashes and yeast infections are actually cut down with disposables because you don't keep wet diapers on kids as long. I guess it depends on whose literature you read about it.

And there all kinds of cloth diaper supplies for carting dirty diapers when you are out and about. You don't even have to use plastic bags.

I didn't use the cloth diapers because of the mess, as well as the inconvenience when you are out. Newborns poop and pee so much that we decided it would be a big pain to have to launder them that often. However, they are cheaper over time.

Do what you guys feel like doing, because in the end, your opinion matters most with your baby. We did what worked for us.. If you're looking to go cheaper too, you can make your own wipes. There are a lot of tutorials online.

Hey I am Colleen's friend who uses cloth in Seattle. We used a diaper service with our daughter and for 6 months with our son. Now we use a one size pocket diaper called fuzibuns. I LOVE THEM. We wash diapers twice a week. They are so easy to use and to clean. Neither of my children have ever had diaper rash. There is a website called punkernoodlebaby.com. She has ton of info and a ton of different diapers. There are great bags to carry wet diapers, liners for regular garbage pails and a shower that attaches to your toilet to rinse off the solids. It is really easy. I think our start up cost was about 400 dollars and we have about 21 diapers. Totally worth it and our water bill only changed by a couple of bucks. Hope that helps. Even my husband loves them.

we do disposable and buy them in bulk on sale or at costco. it is what works best for us. my friends that do cloth diapers love them though. i think one of my friends uses bum genius (i think that is the name, i will find out). you gotta do what works for you. some people love them and they are really cute :).

Wow! You got a big response and great advice. Remember not to get too caught up in the pros and cons of everything with your baby. Just go with it.

It looks like I'm a few days behind the ball, but we started out with disposable diapers so I've stuck with them, but when Jett was a few weeks old I did some research about cloth. They seemed decent, and the laundry part wasn't a concern b/c it was a service so they would've taken care of that. What I came to realize very quickly is that Jett went through diapers like crazy for the first month or two, but now at five months he only has a few dirty ones per day. That's definitely something to think about, as now I think we spend significantly less on diapers than we did a few months ago. Oh, and I like Huggies. My sister uses Pampers and I don't think they seem as absorbent.

Hey there Katie! Congratulations...I didn't know you are pregnant! That is so awesome...apparently primary doesn't get all the info. btw....there are some great disposable ones that aren't the yucky plastic kind. I'd start buying a pack when you go to the store. But remember you'll probably get some as presents! Dani

Katie! Hi! I haven't tried them. Never even considered it. But kudos to you if you do. Congrats on the pregnancy. Isn't it fun?!?

Vanessa said...

Never have used them. I thought about it for 1 second but that was it. Some people love them but they aren't for me. You'll figure it out when your baby gets here!

I'm with Heidi. The idea of carrying around dirty diapers in a ziploc and scrubbing yuckies out everyday doesn't appeal to me. My sister in law uses them although she had to wait till her little guy put on some weight to use them because they didn't make them small enough for him.
good luck choosing

Hey congrats guys! Yay for having a baby! I am proud of you for getting Dan to go with you, I could only get Cory to go when we found out the gender of our little ones! But a boy sounds good, they are fun! Good luck with the diaper issue, looks like you have plenty of advice!

I didn't use cloth, but I wish I had. There's pros and cons to each, maybe you can get a few and try them out to see if you like them or not?
